How to Make History Relevant for Your Students
So, I'll be honest, when I first started teaching and I kept hearing, "we have to make History relevant" for students. I was like what?
I honestly had ZERO clue what they were talking about. And not because I didn't know the importance of History, I mean c'mon I'm a licensed Historian; I just wasn't sure how they expected me as a teacher to get students invested, engaged, and connected to Historical content when I KNEW deep down in my itty bitty soul--- students would probably give me an eye roll and an apathetic shoulder shrug if I even tried to explain the importance of History.
So how do we get students to find History relevant? to make it worthy of their attention and participation?
In order to answer this question, first we have to understand some MAJOR misconceptions that block us from ACTUALLY being able to make history relevant.
For example, the idea that History must always be connected back to a "real-world" application, or not making your lessons accessible to learners, or even not understanding the connection between relevancy and social emotional learning!
